2006 / 07 Number 21 . June 22nd   2007

Dear Parents,

We are all looking forward to our ‘Over, Under, All Around’ Theme Week which promises a variety of different events for us all to enjoy. There are some important things to note about the weeks arrangements so please read these carefully. Please also read on for details of other forthcoming events.

Over, Under, All Around Week : June 25th to 29th 2007

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

I have visited Prior Park this week to meet with Katy Smith who is organising the activities there. These are some important things which we are asking all parents to note about the visits following our risk assessment.

  • All children will need to wear strong , enclosed shoes or trainers. We will be unable to take children wearing open toed shoes or sandals.
  • If it is wet or has been raining in the days before it would be a good idea to bring wellies. Please put named wellies in a named carrier bag.
  • It would be best for all children to wear long trousers. Please wear uniform tops.
  • We intend to go to Prior Park whatever the weather so if it is wet or likely to rain please send your child with a waterproof coat with a hood or cap.
  • If it is warm (our preferred option) please send a sun hat with your child and apply sun cream before school.
  • All children will need a full water bottle for all the trips next week. Tap water only please.

I am sure you appreciate that the health and safety of the whole group is a priority. We will all be able to enjoy ourselves if everyone helps with the above points.

Healthy Food Group Display

The Healthy Food Group have met a few times recently and were very interested in the traffic light labelling that some supermarkets and food manufacturers are now using. Together we have been looking at the way crisps and other similar snacks are labelled and we were quite surprised about some of the information we discovered. The group thought that other parents might find the information interesting too so we have decided to put up a display for a short time during our ‘Over, Under, All Around’ week.

I would like to make it clear that :

  • We are not saying that children cannot bring crisps in their packed lunches.
  • We are asking parents to consider following the same rules as school dinners do in relation to chips and perhaps having proper crisps on Fridays and other snacks the rest of the week.
  • We do recognise that some of the so called healthier snacks have other draw backs, for example they are often sold singly rather than in money saving packs and can be expensive.
  • We recognise that crisps etc are well liked (I love them too especially as a Friday evening treat) and that all foods need to be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet.

This is part of the work we have to do as a school to maintain our Healthy School’s Award. If you would be interested in being part of the healthy food group please let Mrs Claridge know.

Snack Making Activity

Next week Kerry Hillier (Evie’s mum) has offered to make healthy snack pots with the children using a selection of dried fruits and seeds. Please can you let us know if your child has an allergy that we are not aware of. NO NUTS WILL BE USED.

Zero Waste Check Up

On Monday we held a Zero Waste ‘check up’ at lunch time collecting and sorting all the waste.

The results were most impressive ! So many of you are now using reusable plastic pots that there was very little overall waste. The main items were yoghurt pots, and some crisp/snack packets although many of them are labelled as recyclable. This seems to be a great way to help the environment and have a healthy lunch. I guess that many children are actually now bringing a zero waste lunch every day. Thank you for all your support.

Our New Caretaker

We are very pleased to welcome Neil Jones as our new caretaker. Neil is the husband of Mandy Jones, our school cook, and we are very lucky to have them both as members of our staff team. Neil is an excellent handyman with many D.I.Y. skills which I know we will be using to keep the school safe and looking good.

P.E. Kit

Our new P.E. kit has arrived and we are very pleased with it. We will put the items on display in the entrance hall. The kit will consists of navy blue shorts worn with a royal blue round necked T.Shirt with embroidered logo. We will also be selling school P.E. bags, although many of the current YR and Y1 children will already have a bag so may not need one.We would encourage every child to have a kit. Shorts cost £3.65; T.Shirts cost £4 and the bags will be £2.75 If you would like to order kit for your child please complete the form at the end of the newsletter.

Visit of Czech Headteachers

This week the head teachers that I met earlier in the year during my visit to Prague have been in Bath. On Wednesday Jana and Sona, whose schools I visited, spent the morning at Oldfield Park Infants and really enjoyed their time with your children. We were all entertained in the Mayor’s Parlour on Tuesday afternoon and they have been able to look round Bath as well as find out about our education system and visit a range of schools. We will be starting a link between Oldfield Park Infants and the Kindergaten Adelka in the Autumn Term.

Early Morning Sports and Breakfast Club

We have found a new provider for a Breakfast Club to start in the new school year. This is, however, totally dependent on attracting enough users. Please consider using the club especially if your child enjoys the other sports clubs that we run in school. There are more details in the attached letter.  An early response would be appreciated.

Sun Safety Update

The latest advice from Bath and North East Somerset is that it is not appropriate for infant aged children to bring sun cream to school. Therefore we will continue to follow these guidelines.

During the hottest weather we ask that you help us to protect your child by:

·         Applying a high factor sunscreen to arms, legs, face and neck before school.

·         Supplying a named hat. A variety of school hats are available from the office.

·         Providing a thin long sleeved shirt to wear outside if your child is particularly fair skinned.

If your child is particularly fair skinned and needs to reapply sun screen please talk to the class teacher.

Class Photos

A proof of the class photo is being sent home with this newsletter. If you wish to purchase a copy please follow the instructions in the envelope and return it to school by Friday July 6th 2007. This will mean that the photos should be delivered by the end of term.

P.C. World Photographic Competition

We were very excited to receive a phone call from P.C. World last week telling us that Dino Misina from Yellow Class had won their recent competition with his entry in the animals section. Dino had photographed a shark(a plastic one !!) and his picture caught the judge’s eye ! Dino was presented with a framed certificate featuring his photo and a digital camera. He also won an all in one printer for the school which we are thrilled with as it can produce colour photocopies, a facility we didn’t have before. Well done Dino !

Sport’s Morning : Wednesday July 4th. 10.00am

You are welcome to come and support your child’s team as they compete in a variety of simple sports challenges from 10.00am onwards. If you have more than one child in school they will be in the same team. Lists of the teams will be posted on the playground and we have chosen the Solar System as our theme. A full P.E. kit including shorts and T.shirt, daps or trainers will be needed by all children. Being optimistic about the weather, please make sure your child has a sun cap or hat and apply sun block before they come to school.

Each child will also need a named and filled water bottle in school for the refreshment break.

If it is raining at the start of school we will have to postpone and try again on the morning of Tuesday July 10th. On a safety note, we will be setting out apparatus before 10.00am. Pre-school children are welcome but please keep them with you at all times and do not allow them on play on any apparatus.

Y2 Music Workshop : Friday July 6th

The Year 2s will be joining other local infant schools for a morning of music making at Widcombe Infants’ School. Please could all Y2 parents complete the form at the end of the newsletter.

Year 1 Story Telling Day : Thursday 12th July

As part of our Infant Storytelling Network a special day has been planned for all Year 1 children across all six network schools. The day’s activities  will focus on the story of the Jolly Postman with each school focusing on a particular fairy story and working with actors. Ours story is Jack and the Beanstalk. We will be using the grounds of Prior Park College  and as we will be travelling by coach we need to ask for the attached permission slip to be completed. The cost of the day is being covered by the schools. All  children will need a packed lunch, a full water bottle and additional non fizzy drink. School uniform is to be worn plus a coat if the weather is poor. Please make sure that your child has a named sun hat and that you apply sun cream if necessary on the day.

Annual Reports

We are planning to send these out on Friday July 6th.

If you require an additional copy of your child’s report so that each parent can have their own copy please complete the slip at the bottom of this page and return to the school office by Wednesday July 4th . Normally both copies will be sent home with your child.

French Club

I am sure you will all be pleased to hear that Maria, our French teacher, is expecting her first baby in October. This means that she won’t be teaching the children next year although she will still be organising the clubs. The new teacher is called Claire Vallorge and she will be visiting school with Maria over the next few weeks. The current Year 1s (new Y2s)  will continue to have their lessons on Fridays and the Y1 lessons will be on Wednesdays from 3.05 to 3.45pm. Claire will run a taster session early in the new term and further details will follow. In the meantime Maria is happy to give information and answer any questions you may have. She can be contacted on 07751235959

Summer Fair : July 7th 2007

The donation boxes are now in the main entrance if you would like to bring in your items, we would be most grateful.  Enclosed with the Summer Fair poster (which we hope that you display to get the most exposure!), are this years raffle tickets to sell.  They are to be sold at 50p each and the

slips needs to be returned with the money in an envelope on the week leading up to the fair.  If you don't manage to sell them all, please bring them back and we can sell them on the day, more raffle tickets can be obtained from the office.  We have got some fantastic raffle prizes including many family days out tickets to local attractions, our food hamper and vouchers for various shops.

Treasure Hunt

Hopefully, the Treasure Hunt will take place tonight.  The unpredictable weather has made this event a bit uncertain, signs will be up if it is cancelled otherwise we will see you at 5pm.  If you have still not got your ticket yet, you can turn up and pay to get your treasure map, it should be great fun and don't forget your picnic.  See you there.

P.T.A. Meeting : Friday June 29th

There will be a P.T.A. meeting next Friday at 2.00pm. This will take place in the hall as Rainbow Room will be in the canteen.

Please check through the reply slips on the next page carefully and return those that apply to your child promptly. We are sorry that you have been bombarded with so many slips recently. This is the drawback of being part of such an active school with so many events!  We would appreciate not having to chase up individuals at this busy time of year.

Yours sincerely,
