2007 / 08 Number 20 . June 8th 2007
Dear Parents,
Welcome
back after the break. We are looking forward to lots of exciting activities
over the next seven weeks including our ‘Over, Under, All Around’ week which is
fast approaching . There is also some seasonal information in this
edition. Please also keep the dates for the term handy.
Don’t Forget …… In Service Day tomorrow (Friday 8th
June). School Closed to all children.
Staff News Yesterday we appointed a teacher to replace Gabbie Collins during her year’s leave of absence. We are
really looking forward to welcoming Miss Claire Wilson to our school community
from September. Claire excelled in
all areas of our interview process which included teaching a group of reception
children, working on a team task with other adults and a more formal interview.
She showed herself to be a creative teacher with a real excitement and passion
for working with young children. Claire is currently completing the final
teaching placement of her P.G.C.E. course at a large primary school in Melksham. She is looking forward to joining in with many of
our ‘starting school’ activities and will be in school for the class visits and
new parents evening.
Four of our
school councillors assisted with the interviews and we were very proud of how
well they were able to comment on what they had seen and heard. Well done to
Angus McDonald, Rosa Potter, Daisy Escott and Nick Kinson. Thank you also to Maisey Sprake, William Greensides, Enya
Oakley and Jacob Marquiss who showed the candidates
round our school and made excellent guides.
Walk to School ‘Super Heroes’ Breakfast
Walk to School
Diaries.
We
will be judging the diaries next week so if you haven’t brought yours in please
do so after the weekend.
Photos
of the Walk to School Breakfast are now on the website. Does anyone have a copy
of the report that was in the Bath Chronicle during the break
? If so please could we borrow it to photocopy ?
Over, Under, All Around Week : June 25th to 29th 2007
We
are finalising the events for our next theme week which has an outdoor theme.
For much of the week we will be working in partnership with the National Trust
at
We
will send one of our usual programme leaflets home as soon as possible so that
you know what is happening. In addition we will need permission forms to be
signed as several events are taking place away from the school site involving
coach travel.
P.E. Kit
We have decided to introduce a school P.E. kit from September. We are now
joining in with far more activities with other schools and feel that a school
kit would not only look smarter but mean that we can easily identify our
children, improving their safety. We have asked several parents what they think
and the response has been favourable.
The kit will consist of navy blue shorts worn with a royal blue round
necked T.Shirt with embroidered logo. We will also be selling school P.E. bags.
The cost for a pair of shorts, T shirt and bag will be £10. The items can also
be bought separately. As soon as we have some samples we will put them on
display.
Sun Safety
We have increased the amount of shade available to the
children by providing umbrellas at the tables and a new shelter on the grass.
Children do not usually spend periods longer than half an hour outside. In
excessively hot weather we bring the children inside early at lunch time.
During the hottest weather we ask that you help us to
protect your child by :
·
Applying
a high factor sunscreen to arms, legs, face and neck before school.
·
Supplying
a named hat. A variety of school hats are available from the office.
·
Providing
a thin long sleeved shirt to wear outside if your child is particularly fair
skinned.
If your child is particularly fair skinned and needs to
reapply sun screen please talk to the class teacher.
We are currently seeking further advice about young children
being allowed to bring sun screen to school.
Unfortunately we have
had to re apply for planning permission for our other new shelters as the law
has altered since we first applied. It now seems unlikely that they will be
completed before the end of term which is a great disappointment. I have asked
the planners to be as speedy as they can in dealing with our application so
haven’t given up all hope!
Water
is Cool In School
Now that we have such lovely warm weather we would like to
encourage all children to bring a water bottle to school every day. This
means that your child has access to drinking water throughout lesson time
without having to leave the classroom to visit the water fountain.
This is a reminder of the scheme’s guidelines which we ask
everyone to follow.
·
Each child may bring to school a 500ml
water bottle with a non spill sports type top.
·
Only clear bottles and tap water are
allowed.
·
The bottle must be clearly and
permanently marked with the child’s first name and surname.
·
Bottles will be kept in the middle of
the tables in the classroom or in another suitable location chosen by the class
teacher.
·
Bottles will be taken home each evening
to be washed and refilled with tap water.
·
If necessary children will be helped to
refill their bottles.
·
Children should not open lids with
their teeth.
Any clear water bottle is fine. Bottles are on sale from
the school office but ordinary mineral / spring water bottles are fine.
A number of
children have been bringing in coloured bottles which are not suitable for the
classroom.
Class Photos
Tempest Photography will be coming to school next Wednesday
afternoon to take our annual class photographs. This is the same company that
takes our individual photos in the Autumn which are
usually of a good quality. We have chosen Tempest as we have not been happy
with the quality and / or cost of other companies we have used in the past.
Please make sure that your child is in school uniform on this occasion.
Zero Waste Mondays
A reminder that we are continuing our Zero Waste Mondays. This term the children have been
given a card to collect their stickers on and those who regularly bring a Zero
Waste lunch will be rewarded at the end of term. On Monday June 18th
we will collect up, sort and weigh all the waste, not just the foil so please
make an extra special effort on this occasion so that we have as little non
recyclable waste as possible.
Starting School In
September 2008
We are
compiling our list of children due to start school in September 2008. Please
check that any younger brothers or sisters due to start are registered and
don’t assume that we know about them. If
you, or anyone you know needs a form please check that we have your name and
address.
Infant /
All
Year 2s should have received a special newsletter (on bright blue paper)
earlier this week. Please make sure you return the permission slip by Monday June 11th.
The
Co-op Scala Art Competition
The Co-op Scala is supporting the
‘Children’s Society’ as their sponsored charity this year. This is the charity
who award our Children’s Rights Charter. They are running an art competition
exclusively for children at this school to help raise money for the Children’s
Society so each entry will cost £1. They would like the children to create a
picture to show what they would like to be when they grow up. This might be a
good activity to carry out over the holiday. Please bring your named entries
in by Friday 13th June. Please sellotape a £1 coin to the back of
each picture entered.
Every Parent
Matters
The Department for Education and Skills has produced this document which
sets out what is being done to promote the development of services for parents
and children as well as their involvement in shaping services. We have four
copies in school. If you would like to borrow one please ask at the office.
