2006 / 07 Number 17 . April 27th   2007

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to school for the summer terms. This is a busy time as usual with some of our favourite annual events taking place. Dates of many are included in this newsletter together with details of those that are coming up soon.

Parents Evenings : Monday 30th April and Tuesday 1st May

Don’t forget that our parents evenings are on Monday and Tuesday of next week.

Monday April 30th  from 4.00 to 7.00 pm

Tuesday May 1st   from 3.30 to 6.00pm.

If you haven’t signed up please do so on Monday morning. Appointments will last ten minutes. You will be able to discuss your child’s progress this year and targets for the remainder of the year. Year 2 parents will also have the opportunity to be informed about the likely outcomes of the end of Key Stage 1 assessments which will be taking place during May.

We would encourage all parents to make an appointment.

Playground Working Party : Sunday April 29th

Please try to come along and help on Sunday anytime between 10am and 1pm. We will be doing some essential tasks to prepare the school grounds for the summer term. Tasks will include placing bark on the paths in the wildlife area and on the organic garden. The loan of wheelbarrows to move bark across the playground would be appreciated and a supply of shovels would be good too. Children are welcome with their parents, I am sure they can help too.

Our Organic Garden : Please help.

We would love to get our garden into full production this summer. We need some helpers who would enjoy sowing seeds and plants and helping us look after them. Please let us know if you can help. It would be fantastic to be able to grow and eat our own produce. We also have some African ’Bag Gardens  that we want to set up. Intrigued as to what these are ? Why not come and help us and find out !!

PTA Planning Meeting

The next PTA meeting will be on Friday May 4th  in school starting at 2.15pm in the canteen. The main topics of conversation will be the Summer Fair and ideas for an after school fund raising event. Please try to come along and share your ideas and help make these a success.

In Service Day

The last In Service day for this year will take place on Friday June 8th 2007 when staff will be engaged in a variety of activities including Philosophy For Children Training, a Special Needs Conference and assessment activities.

Seasonal Messages – Summer is here !

Naming school uniform.

Please check that all items of school uniform and P.E. kit  are clearly

named. It is very difficult for us to match up un-named uniform to the right child. On warmer days the children do tend to shed their fleeces and sweatshirts and don’t always pick them up !!

This is also the season when we like to get outdoors as much as possible so please could all children  have a pair of daps in school for outdoor P.E.

Baseball caps and legionnaire style caps are available from the office in anticipation of much sunshine !

Water Is Cool In School

We do encourage every child to have a water bottle in school daily. The following is a reminder of the guidelines for this scheme which we do ask everyone to follow.

·         Each child may bring to school a 500ml water bottle with a non spill sports type top.

·         Only clear bottles and water are allowed.

·         The bottle must be clearly and permanently marked with the child’s first name and surname.

·         Bottles will be kept in the middle of the tables in the classroom or in another suitable location chosen by the class teacher.

·         Bottles will be taken home each evening to be washed and refilled with tap water.

·         If necessary children will be helped to refill their bottles.

·         Children should not open lids with their teeth.

Please do not put the staff in a difficult position by sending flavoured water which is not suitable for drinking in the classroom.

Sweets in School

Some time ago, in response to parents comments, we decided to end a trend of children bringing in sweets to share for their birthdays or following a holiday, Recently this has started to happen again, probably because we have forgotten to make this policy clear.  Whilst we appreciate the gesture of sharing we would still prefer not  to encourage this.

We do celebrate birthdays in school at our ‘Golden Assemblies’ and we would love to receive a postcard showing where the children have spent their holidays which we can use in school.

After School Activities

Oldfield Out of Hours Learning Opportunites

These are for children aged 5+, are based at Oldfield School (not here)  and are detailed in the green booklet that you should receive with this newsletter.

Year 2 Summer Term Enrichment Clubs

Additional  information is attached for parents of Year 2 children with details of several activities on offer here .

Beechen Cliff School Extended Schools Activities Package

This too is attached for Y2 parents only.

Breakfast Club

As most of you know we had to close our Breakfast Club due to lack of support. We did offer an alternative package through one of the Sports Coaching companies that we work with but still could not attract enough interest. One or two parents have approached me to ask if I will try once again to get a club going. Any club would have to be self funding and run by an outside organisation. It would probably cost about £3 per session. If you are interested in a club commencing in September 2007 please complete the form at the end of the newsletter so that we can gauge interest across the school.

Family Learning Opportunities

Parentlineplus have been commissioned to provide a number of free groups for parents in the Bath Area. A sheet detailing the courses available, dates and venues is attached. The one on ‘Bringing Up Confident Children’ is taking place here on Thursdays 7th, 14th , 21st 28th June and 5th July 2007 from 10am until 12noon so it would be great to have a ‘home crowd’ attending as well as welcoming others from the local area. Please see the course sheet for details of how to apply.

Walk On Wednesdays ~  WOW !

 Please keep ‘Walking on Wednesdays’.

May 21st to 25th is Walk to School Week with the theme ‘Strider Saves the Planet’

Strider is the character on the WOW logo !!

We will be expanding our Walk on Wednesday for this week and details will follow in the next newsletter.

Zero Waste Mondays

We are also doing our bit to ‘Save the Planet’ with our zero waste Mondays. Well done to all those families who are sending a zero waste lunch every Monday and on several other days too. Remember a Zero Waste Lunch only contains things that can be re-used, recycled or composted, leaving nothing to throw in the bin.

Healthy Food Group

Miss Cotton and I attended a Food in Schools conference last Friday and have returned with lots of useful information and interesting ideas to make eating in school an even healthier and more enjoyable experience. We are planning to discuss some of the ideas at a meeting of the school’s Healthy Food Group on Friday 11th May at 2.15pm.  Do come along if you are interested in joining this group of parents and helping to plan future activities.

After School Activities for Year 2 only.

Year 2 Enrichment Clubs

During the summer term we usually offer children in Year 2 the opportunity to stay after school and attend a club. These clubs are run by the teaching staff and cover a range of interests. This year the clubs will run on a Wednesday evening for six weeks from Wednesday May 16th to  Wednesday June 27th . We do realise that this clashes with Year 2 French club, however, now that we offer so many after school activities this is the only night when we have enough space to run the clubs.

This year we are asking the children to choose which club they would like to attend in advance so that we can make best use of the time available.

Clubs will finish at 3.45pm and we would ask that children are collected promptly.

If your child would like to participate please return the attached form by Friday May 11th indicating their first, second and third choice of club.

Beechen Cliff Extended Schools Activities Package

Beechen Cliff School is offering a range of activities for children aged 6 to 11years during Term 6 (June 4th to July 26th 2007).

Please see the attached letter detailing the activities on offer and return the reply slip if you would like to receive a booking form. I would expect places to be popular so if you are interested please reply as soon as possible.
