2006 / 07 Number 16 . April 4th   2007

Dear Parents,

Here we are at the end of term already. The past few weeks have flown by and we have been lucky to have such lovely weather for much of the time.

Open Morning for Prospective Parents

We welcomed several parents and children to our open morning last Thursday all of whom seemed suitably impressed by the school. Several of the Year 2s did a fantastic job giving guided tours in their own special way. Thank you to all other members of the school community who came along to help and support this new venture. If you know of anyone who was unable to visit I am always happy to show people round at a mutually convenient time. We also have a brand new colour prospectus so again please ask for a copy for anyone you know who might like one.

Bath Half Marathon

A special thank you to Chris Marshall and George McDonald for their magnificent runs on behalf of the school. Thanks too to those who tunred up and cheered them on. It was good fun to watch the runners go by and its surprising who else you spot going past. Congratualtions to others associated with the school who ran, Simon Kale, Mandy Sobey, Sarah Barnes and Anne Sixsmith.

The final total raised isn’t known yet but proceeds from the ’13 metre mini marathon’ and sponsor forms in school amount to over £150.

Playground Working Party : Sunday April 29th

We are planning a working party morning from 10am to 1pm to help prepare the school grounds for the summer term. Tasks will include placing bark on the paths in the wildlife area and on the organic garden. The loan of wheelbarrows to move bark across the playground would be appreciated and a supply of shovels would be good too. Children are welcome with their parents, I am sure they can help too.

Our Organic Garden

We would love to get our garden into full production this summer. We need some helpers who would enjoy sowing seeds and plants and helping us look after them. Please let us know if you can help. It would be fantastic to be able to grow and eat our own produce. We also have some African ’Bag Gardens  that we want to set up. Intrigued as to what these are ? Why not come and help us and find out !!

SATs Meeting for Year 2 Parents

Don’t forget to come along on Monday April 23rd at 6.30pm to find out more about the Year 2 assessments which will be taking place up to the end of May. We will explain what the assessment tests and tasks involve, how we prepare your child in school, what you can do as parents and give you the chance to see past years’ activities.

Time Bank Healthy Living Challenge

Time Bank generously gave prizes to five children in each of the Year 1 classes in response to their competition which was to design a menu for a healthy zero waste lunch box.

The following children each won cookery based gifts.

Purple Class                          Yellow Class

Gabriel Barnes                        Emma Ladds

                               Lauren Midgley                        Tabitha Lawson

                               Joanna Tse                              Dino Misina

                               Holly Reynolds Pryce              Esther Sampson

                               Nick Kinson                              Jacob Evans

The Time Bank have also given the school a smoothie maker.

Ready Steady Cook

Continuing the cooking theme, Anna Marie who ran the day for Year 1 is hoping to return during the summer term and run a family learning course entitled ‘Ready Steady Cook’. This involves parents taking part in cooking activities with their child in school and sounds a lot of fun. More details will follow next term so watch this space as places will be limited.

Purple Class Visit the Mayor

On Monday of this week Purple Class were the honoured guests of the Mayor of Bath. She very kindly invited the whole class to visit the Guildhall after meeting Zak at a local event recently. They were treated to a glass of civic squash and biscuits and all got the chance to try on  child sized versions of the Civic Robes and Chains, as well as holding a mace. Mr George took lots of photos and we’ll arrange to put them on the website as soon as possible.

Two Tunnels Project

As mentioned in the last newsletter I have managed to get a leaflet for each family about this exciting project, which is attached.

The Ice Cream Season.

Jack has been taking advantage of the early warm weather and arriving outside school on several days. He came into school a couple of weeks ago with a very generous donation of £50 for school funds.

Parents Evening Summer 07 : Advance Warning !!!

As in recent years,  we have decided to hold parents evenings during the first part of the summer term as the teachers feel that it is more valuable to discuss your child’s progress earlier in the term, whilst there is still a significant amount of teaching time left. The discussion that takes place will then form the basis of the report you will receive in July. Due to other events in very short Term 5 these will be held close to the start of the new term on Monday 30th April from and Tuesday 1st May

Therefore this term’s parents’ evenings will be held on Monday April 30th  from 4.00 to 7.00 pm and Tuesday May1st   from 3.30 to 6.00pm.

Appointments will last ten minutes. You will be able to discuss your child’s progress this year and targets for the remainder of the year . Year 2 parents will also have the opportunity to be informed about the likely outcomes of the end of Key Stage 1 assessments which will be taking place during May.

We would encourage all parents to make an appointment. Lists will be displayed outside the classrooms as soon as we return. We will place the lists for Year 2 on the windows  just inside the blue doors to save you trekking up to the far end of the school.

In Service Day

The last In Service day for this year will take place on Friday June 8th 2007 when staff will be engaged in a variety of activities including Philosophy For Children Training, a Special Needs Conference and assessment activities.

School Term and Holiday Dates 2008 / 2009

For those of you who like to forward plan these dates are attached. Extra copies of holiday dates for the current year (2006 / 07) and next year (2007/08) are available from the pockets outside the office.

Infant Junior School Liasion

We are continuing to develop our links with the junior school. Last week Penny Jenner visited and we shared lots of ideas about improving the transition arrangements for Year 2. We have planned a much more detailed programme of visits and joint activities involving Y3 teachers and children from the juniors. Once they are finalised we will let you have further details, hopefully early in the new term.
