2006 / 07 Number 15 . March 23rd  2007

Dear Parents,

It will soon be the end of term so here are a few items of news and events to see us through to the end of term. Don’t forget that the clocks go forward this weekend so next week we will have darker mornings but lighter evenings.

Open Morning.

It was good to see so many of you in school for open morning last Friday and especially the number of dads who were able to make it. We hope you enjoyed the opportunity to share your child’s work and look at the displays in school. A big thank you to our team of support staff for organising the crèche in the hall. This once again seemed to be very successful and busy.

Comic Relief : Red Nose Day : Friday March 16th

Were we mad ? Well, I did wonder whether Comic Relief and Open Morning on the same day was a good idea but it seemed to be fine and a brilliant amount of money was raised. The total combining donations on the day, the sale of red noses and a competition in the staff room raised an amazing total of £245.32. I am sure that those of you who watched the coverage on television last Friday night will know that the money will support a number of very worthwhile causes in the UK and Africa.

Open Morning for Prospective Parents : Thursday 29th March 9.30 to 11.30am

Its not too late to let anyone you know you know with a child due to start in September 2008 that they are most welcome to come along to our open morning. Our new prospectus will be available and we will be showcasing a variety of activities that take place at Oldfield Park Infants’ School.

Bath Half Marathon : Sunday March 25th

Don’t forget to come along and support our runners, Chris and George. Our banner is made and we need plenty of children to hold it up as the runners pass by. If you would like to come and show your support outside Kingsmead Motors  the runners expect to be there at about 12noon, so if we meet there at 11.45 that should be fine. I am sure we will spot other parents and friends of the school including Sarah Barnes, mum of Gabriel in Purple Class. We also wish any other parents and friends running success in the event and hope that the weather will be kind.

Parent Governor

We are pleased to welcome Hayley Andrews as our new parent governor. I am sure that Hayley is known to many of you already. She is the mum of Robbie in Red Class and her older son Owen is in Year 3 at the junior school. The official notice declaring her duly elected is on the notice board.

School Website

The website has been updated with lots of new photos in particular several of ‘The Mystery’ theme week and my recent visit to the Czech Republic. I know that many of you are finding the website a good way to let friends and family who are living elsewhere in the country keep in touch with the children’s activities.

Playground Working Party : Sunday April 29th

We are planning a working party morning from 10am to 1pm to help prepare the school grounds for the summer term. Tasks will include placing bark on the paths in the wildlife area and on the organic garden. The loan of wheelbarrows to move bark across the playground would be appreciated and a supply of shovels would be good too. Children are welcome with their parents, I am sure they can help too.

Shelters and Shade

As summer approaches we are planning to improve the school grounds by providing three shelters, one in each of the reception outdoor areas and another in the quiet area of the main playground. The reception shelters will enable the children to play more safely in sunny weather and extend the use of the areas in less favourable weather too. The quiet area shelter has a dual purpose, protection from the sun and the rain for both the children during school hours and for parents waiting at the beginning and end of the day.

SATs Meeting for Year 2 Parents

Please come along on Monday April 23rd at 6.30pm to find out more about the Year 2 assessments which will be taking place up to the end of May. We will explain what the assessment tests and tasks involve, how we prepare your child in school, what you can do as parents and give you the chance to see past years’ activities.

Time Bank Healthy Living Week

Year 1 had a great time when Time Bank visited on Monday for a Healthy Cooking Challenge session. The children made fruit kebabs, smoothies and sandwiches.

This is all part of the run up to Time Bank’s Healthy Living Week which takes place in the Ester holidays. Every family has been sent home a programme with this newsletter. Please take time to have a look at what is happening and consider joining in. I know that those families who took part last year had a great time.

Holidays In Term Time

As head teacher I am allowed to authorise up to 10 days holiday per year although I am discouraged from doing so except in the most exceptional circumstances. I have discussed this with the governors and we do realise that the decisions of many families to take holidays in term time are guided by price and working patterns. We also feel that there can be benefits to children in having a family holiday, although overall attendance does have to be taken into account including periods of illness.

Holidays will not be authorised for Year 2 children during May when statutory assessments take place and should be avoided in April when we are preparing for these.

Two Tunnels Project

This project is being implemented by the ‘Two Tunnels Group’ B&NES and Sustrans. Its aim is to create a shared path for cyclists and pedestrians linking Oldfield Park to Lyncombe Vale and Midford via the Devonshire and Combe Down Tunnels. The project is looking for local support and it is certainly something we would be interested in supporting as a school with our interest in the local community and green issues. For more information you can visit the Two Tunnels website at www.twotunnels.org.uk. We have a few leaflets about the project in school and I will try to get enough to send one home for each family  with the next newsletter.

PTA Update

Just a quick note to inform parents that that I will be standing down from my post as joint chair of the PTA at the end of the Spring Term. I will continue to fully support PTA events but unfortunately  need to focus more of my time on work commitments.

The good news is that Jo Brimble will continue in her role as PTA Chair. However a new Co-Chair is really needed. I am confident that someone will be in a position to step in and help Jo.

I know you will all agree that our children attend a fantastic school and the PTA plays a vital role in enhancing our children’s learning experience.

Many thanks to all the parents who have supported me in my role over the past 18 months.

PTA SECRETARY

I am very pleased to announce that Maria Coles, mum of Josephine in Red Class is to be our new Secretary. She is replacing Rick Le Coyte who promises me that he will still be in a position to design fab posters when needed.

Thanks for all your help over the past 18 months Rick and welcome to Maria.

VALENTINE’S CAKE SALE

I know it was a while ago now but we raised £91.00 a great sum and as always there were some fantastic Valentine’s works of art.

EASTER

This year we will be holding an "Easter Chick" hunt on the last day of term Wednesday 4th April. We shall be hiding 160 little yellow chicks in the playground for the children to find.  When found the children will receive a small chocolate treat as a prize.

We shall not require a donation from you or the children to take part.

TEA TOWELS

Still on the way!!!!!!  Quite a job this one so please bear with us. I promise your child will not leave the school without their Tea Towels!!!!
