2006 / 07 Number 14 . March 9th  2007

Dear Parents,

It is good to be back in school after my week in the Czech Republic and great fun to be involved in our mysterious theme week. Thank you for the warm welcome so many of you have given me upon my return.

‘The Mystery’

As I write we are at the end of our ‘Mystery’ theme week which seems to have been most successful in inspiring the children’s imaginations. Lots of different ideas have been suggested as to what the mystery object that arrived on Monday might be. Not surprisingly space and aliens have been a popular theme and we have enjoyed arriving at school to discover other mysterious objects and happenings.

Thank you for all the effort you put into today’s dressing up day. The children look wonderful and there are certainly some very imaginative ideas on. Hopefully a picture will be appearing in the Bath Chronicle on Monday.

Open Morning : Friday  March 16th 2006

All parents are invited to visit the school on this morning between 9.15 and 10.30am. This is to give you the opportunity to spend some time with your child looking at and sharing the work he / she has been doing during ‘The Mystery’ Week  and over the past term. Your child might also like to take you on a short tour of the school to see some of the displays.

You are not expected to spend the full hour in school and may pop in anytime during the hour. About 20 minutes spent with your child should be long enough. If you have more than one child there should be time to see both of them.

This is not a time to discuss your child’s progress with the class teacher. There will be another opportunity for individual appointments during the early part of the summer term.

If you are not able to attend the morning then grandparents are more than welcome, however due to limitations of space we would prefer only one or two visitors per child.

It would also help enormously if you could share the care of pre-school children. As last year we will run a small crèche in the hall for anyone who cannot find alternative care.

We will need to take the registers between 9.00 and 9.15am so need to ask you to leave the children as usual at the start of the school day. If you prefer not to return home you are welcome to wait in the canteen until the doors re-open.

S.E.N. Parents Evening : Tuesday 20th March ~ 3.30 to 6.00pm

This is an opportunity for parents of children receiving additional support to meet with the class teacher and review progress towards individual targets. Those parents involved should receive an invitation from the class teacher over the next few days.

The class teachers will also make contact with you if they feel that it might be beneficial to arrange a meeting to discuss your child’s progress.

Open Morning for Prospective Parents : Thursday 29th March 9.30 to 11.30am

Please let anyone you know who may have a child due to start in September 2008 that they are most welcome to come along to school for our open morning. Our new prospectus will be available and we will be showcasing a variety of activities that take place at Oldfield Park Infants’ School.

Head’s Visit to the Czech Republic

My week in Prague was most enjoyable and gave me a very interesting and thought provoking insight into the Czech Education System. I will be putting up a display illustrating some of my experiences both visiting different schools and the sights of Prague. Hopefully this will be complete in time for open morning next week. I thought that some of you might also like to hear a little more about the visit so I will make a short presentation on Thursday March 22nd at 2.30pm.

Comic Relief : Red Nose Day : Friday March 16th

We must be mad as this is on the same day as Open Morning but the children can dress up and wear their noses if they wish ! The suggestions are  that the children wear big clothes to school borrowing from mum, dad or older brothers and sisters, or they might like to wear something red or decorate their uniforms with red accessories. Anything goes but we’ve tried to keep it simple as it follows straight on from our dressing up this week. ’ All we ask is that in return for wearing unusual clothes they bring a donation to comic relief.

Thank you for your support so far. We ran out of red noses in a few days and are sorry that a few children were disappointed. They are available at Sainsbury’s if you missed out.

Bath Half Marathon : Sunday March 25th

The sponsor forms are now displayed outside each classroom and on the windows opposite the blue doors. Over the next couple of weeks we will be making banners of support. Last time we had parents and a teacher taking part was 2003 when we organised a ‘cheering on’ party outside Kingsmead Motors. If you would like to come and show your support the runners expect to be there at about 12noon, so if we meet there at 11.45 that should be fine. I am sure we will spot other parents and friends of the school including Sarah Barnes, mum of Gabriel in Purple Class.

YR Trip to ‘the egg’ for Claytime : Wednesday 14th March

Nick White from the theatre has contacted us to suggest that each child brings something to protect their clothes for this performance in which the children will be participating.  An old, large adult T shirt or shirt would be ideal.

SATs Meeting for Year 2 Parents

Please come along on Monday April 23rd at 6.30pm to find out more about the Year 2 assessments which will be taking place up to the end of May. We will explain what the assessment tests and tasks involve, how we prepare your child in school, what you can do as parents and give you the chance to see past years’ activities.

Time Bank Healthy Eating Challenge : Monday 19th March

Year 1 have been invited to take part in this activity which involves a number of local schools. Volunteers from the Time Bank based in Twerton will be working with Yellow and Purple Classes in school to produce simple healthy food such as smoothies and snacks. The children will be issued with a healthy eating challenge to complete for which there will be prizes for healthy ideas and originality. The children might like to bring in a cooking apron for this activity.

Yours sincerely
