2006 / 07 Number 8 . December 8th  2006

Dear Parents,

Christmas has arrived at Oldfield Park Infants’ School this week. Every child has placed a decoration on our tree and the first candle on our Advent  crown has been lit . We have been lighting our advent candle during assemblies as well as opening the doors on our advent calendar.

Christmas Fair.

Yet again we had a wonderful Christmas Fair last Saturday. A huge thank you is due to Lisa Cotterell, and  the P.T.A. Committee who worked so hard in the run up to the fair and on the day itself. Thank you also to all those who ran the stalls and helped with the catering. It is always good to see so many families and friends of the school enjoying the day. The final amount raised was about £1500, an amazing sum of money which  will be used to  directly benefit the children in school.

Christmas Celebration.

Our first Celebrations have taken place this week with our reception classes telling the nativity story to family and friends of the school. I am sure those of you who were there will agree that this first Christmas in school was a very special occasion to be remembered and a wonderful way to be reminded of the true meaning of Christmas.

Y1 and Y2 Celebration

We are looking forward to next week’s performances of ‘Jesus’ Christmas Party’ by Years 1 and 2. We have been really enjoying our rehearsals so far . Be prepared to be entertained with action, song and dance.  On Monday we will be joined by younger brothers and sisters as well as Year 3 from Oldfield Park Juniors. As ever we will endeavour to squeeze everyone in who has asked for a ticket and give you as good a view as possible.

Christmas Lunch Money

If you have ordered a Christmas lunch please remember to send in payment of £1.70 in a named purse or envelope on Monday December 11th . Please hand to the class teacher.

Children’s Society Children’s Rights Charter

Recently Sonia from the Children’s Society visited school to talk to the children and check that we are still listening to their views and giving them the chance to help make decisions that affect them. I am pleased to say that our charter has been renewed and we will be awarded with a blue star to go on our certificate. Attached is a copy of Sonia’s report for you to share with your child.

Parent Governor Vacancy

A vacancy has arisen for a parent governor for our school. We plan to ask for nominations and hold the elections at the beginning of next term. In the meantime parents may like to consider whether they would be interested in fulfilling such a role. More information will be available after Christmas.

Wanted : Spare Clothes

From time to time children have accidents of one kind or another which require a change of clothes. We are in need of more socks and tights and also larger sized skirts or pinafores. We are fine for everything else. May I also remind parents to return any clothes that we have lent on these occasions.

Looking after the good name of our school

Scooters …… again !!!

Please can I make yet another plea for safe scootering both on and off the school site.I have received several complaints about scooters in the past couple of weeks.

One baby in a push chair has been run into several times by children scooting on the playground after school. Also a gentleman and a member of staff walking down Dorset Street have been practically run over by children who are scooting ‘wildly’ down the hill. Please, please supervise your child and follow our code of conduct.

The good news is that the scooter and cycle racks are now fixed and in use.

And in the park.

Although the park is not part of the school, the way that children behave there also reflects on the school. Of course the park is a great  place to let off steam after a hard day at school but one or two parents have mentioned that the behaviour of a minority is effecting the enjoyment of others.

Christingles : Tuesday December 12th

If you have a child in year 2 please remember to bring in an orange (rather than a Satsuma)  and a small candle on this day to make christingles. We will then be holding our traditional Christingle Service for the rest of the school.

Nativity At The Farm ~ in aid of the Thembalitsha Project in South Africa

On Saturday 16th December, 18 students from Beechen Cliff and Hayesfield schools invite you to join in a very special Nativity at Warleigh Lodge farm in Bathford. Bring your children dressed as a character from the nativity and help to act it out with real animals at the farm. Tickets are £5 for adults and children including refreshments. They are available from Rose or Frankie on 01225 859065. It starts at 5pm and will finish by 7pm. There is a poster on the parents’ board.

Please remember to refer to the red Christmas Special for details of the many special events in school between now and the end of term. Spare copies are available outside the office and online.

Yours sincerely
