2006 / 07 Number 7 . December 7th  2007

Dear Parents,

We have had a wonderful start to the Christmas season in school over the past week. All the children have placed a decoration on the tree and we have lit the first candle on our advent crown. We have enjoyed our Christmas Fair and most importantly shared the children’s retellings of the story of that first Christmas long ago. Quite an eventful start to the month !

Christmas Fair.

Yet again this was a highly successful family event enjoyed and supported by so many of you. A huge thank you is due to Maria Coles, and  the P.T.A. Committee who worked really hard in the run up to the fair and on the day itself. Thank you also to those of you who ran the stalls and helped with the catering. Thanks also to Mandy for giving up her precious Saturday to prepare and cook lunch.  The final amount raised was about £1200, an amazing sum of money some of which is already earmarked to help pay for our lovely new staging.

Christmas Celebrations.

Our Celebrations have taken place this week with all the children involved in telling the nativity story to family and friends of the school. I am sure those of you who were at the reception performances will agree that this first Christmas in school was an occasion to be remembered and a wonderful way to be reminded of the true meaning of Christmas.

Years 1 and 2 have also been hard at work performing ‘The Nativity’ to parents and friends of the school. Their celebration included great acting, singing and a variety of dances to tell the Christmas Story. By the time you read this Y2 will have just returned from performing ‘The Nativity’ at the egg theatre which will have been a very special occasion for both performers and audience. We are very lucky to be able to perform there for the second year running and really appreciate this amazing opportunity. We will tell you more about their special day in the next edition. Once again thank you to all the adults who helped the children with their acting, speaking, singing, dancing and costumes.

Group Christmas Photos

Once we return from the Christmas break we will offer you all the opportunity to buy a group photo of your child’s class in their nativity costumes.

In the meantime check out the website for plenty of photos of Christmas events in school.

Christmas Lunch and  Payment

PLEASE  make sure that if you have ordered Christmas lunch for next week that the money is sent in a named envelope on Monday morning, 10th December. Please hand the envelope into your child’s class and not to the office.

The cost is £1.70 per child and £2.30 per adult meal.

If your child is having lunch on other days next week then the payment can be made in one envelope.

It would really help us at this busy time of year not to have to chase late payments.

If you are joining your child for Christmas Lunch please arrive at 11.50am.

Christingles : Thursday December 13th

If you have a child in Year 2 (Blue and Orange Classes)  please remember to bring in an orange (rather than a Satsuma)  and a small candle on this day to make christingles. We will then be holding a Christingle procession at Oldfield Park Baptist Church on Friday.

Christingle Carol Service

Please come along and support this new event on Friday 14th December at 10.00am at Oldfield Park Baptist Church. The Year 2s will be lighting and explaining the meaning of their Christingles and we will be singing some favourite traditional Carols with seasonal readings from different members of our school community. All are welcome to join us ~ it would be lovely to fill the church and there is plenty of room for mums, dads, grandparents and friends.

Please enter the church by the main doors on Triangle East.

We would appreciate a few parents to walk with us to the church and back. We will be leaving just after 9.30am. Please let your child’s class teacher know if you can help.

Christmas Parties. Monday December 17th.

These will take place during the afternoon. There will be fun and games in each classroom, a visit from Father Christmas and  a treat of food and drink . We will finish the afternoon with a whole school get together in the hall.Your child may wear ‘party clothes’ on this occasion however please remember that the normal activities of a school day will be taking place so nothing too fancy please - just a change from uniform if you wish.

Your P.T.A. needs you !

The money raised by the P.T.A. makes a huge difference to what we can provide for your children in school. Many of the special events, trips, visitors and theme weeks are paid for or heavily subsidised by the funds we raise and I know that it is these activities that help to make our school  ‘buzz’ and make learning memorable for the children.

Although the fair was very successful this was mainly due to a few people working incredibly hard and we really do need more of you to come forward in the New Year. In fact we were desperately short of help on the day and several parents gave up the opportunity to go round the stalls with their children in order to keep things going. Every parent is automatically a member of the P.T.A. and if just a few more of you could help it would make all the difference and be truly appreciated.

The end of the last school year saw lots of our long established families leaving as their youngest child went up to the juniors. This year we have many new families where the oldest child has just started school. We do need you to become involved if you possibly can. Perhaps it’s a good idea for that New Year’s Resolution ~ it could be more fun than a diet or the gym and almost as good for you !!

Medicines in School

Please can I remind parents that we can only  give prescribed medicines to children, and then only if a form is completed.

For health and safety reasons no other medication should be brought to school including cough sweets and other cold ‘cures’ such as Tunes, Lockets etc.

Food For Life Gold

Our next Food For Life meeting is on Thursday January 10th at 1.15pm in school. Any interested parents are welcome to attend. We are particularly looking for people who would enjoy gardening or cooking with the children. Please note this is a change of date from the one we originally set.

After Christmas we will be changing the way that school uniform is sold. Further details will be available in January. In the meantime if you require new uniform for the new school term please order it now in the usual way.

Please can you check any school sweat cardis that you may have. One has gone missing from Red Class, size 26/28 and named ‘Hope Hammond’. If you have it by accident Hope’s mum would really appreciate its return.

Two Tunnels Project Big Lottery Bid ~ Vote Now !

Some time ago I mentioned this project which aims to open up two railway tunnels between Midford and Bath and create a new cycle and walking route part of which would pass through Oldfield Park close to both our school and the juniors. This forms part of a larger project called Sustrans Connect 2, a range of walking and cycling projects across the country. This project is competing with 3 other projects for a single grant of £50million from the Big Lottery Fund’s Living Landmarks : The People’s Millions. This is to be decided by public vote via the internet and telephone.  Internet voting has started and continues until Monday 10th December at www.thepeoples50million.org.uk . Telephone voting is from Friday December 7th to Monday December 10th . To obtain the number you need to fill out a form at www.sustransconnect2.org.uk or text the work Connect2 to 80010.
