2007 / 08 Number 17.  9th May   2008

Dear Parents,

I hope you all enjoyed the May Day Bank Holiday. It was good that the sun shone for much of it and to have such a lovely warm week back in school.  Our plans are coming together now for several events in the weeks to come which we hope everyone will enjoy.

Seasonal Messages – Summer is here !

Sun Safety

The latest advice from Bath and North East Somerset is that it is not appropriate for infant aged children to bring sun cream to school. Therefore we will continue to follow the same guidelines as in previous years.

During the hottest weather we ask that you help us to protect your child by:

·         Applying a high factor sunscreen to arms, legs, face and neck before school.

·         Supplying a named hat. A variety of school hats are available from the office.

·         Providing a thin long sleeved shirt to wear outside if your child is particularly fair skinned.

The children are never outside for more than 30 minutes at a time and there is now plenty of shade on the playground and grassed areas. If your child is particularly fair skinned and needs to reapply sun screen please talk to the class teacher.

Naming school uniform.

Please check that all items of school uniform and P.E. kit  are clearly

named. It is very difficult for us to match up un-named uniform to the right child. On warmer days the children do tend to shed their fleeces and sweatshirts and don’t always pick them up !!

This is also the season when we like to get outdoors as much as possible so please could all children  have a pair of daps in school for outdoor P.E.

Baseball caps and legionnaire style caps are available from the office in anticipation of continued sunshine !

Water Is Cool In School

We do encourage every child to have a water bottle in school daily. The following is a reminder of the guidelines for this scheme which we do ask everyone to follow.

·         Each child may bring to school a 500ml water bottle with a non spill sports type top.

·         Only clear bottles and water are allowed.

·         The bottle must be clearly and permanently marked with the child’s first name and surname.

·         Bottles will be kept in the middle of the tables in the classroom or in another suitable location chosen by the class teacher.

·         Bottles will be taken home each evening to be washed and refilled with tap water.

·         If necessary children will be helped to refill their bottles.

·         Children should not open lids with their teeth.

Please do not put the staff in a difficult position by sending flavoured water which is not suitable for drinking in the classroom.

Walk to School Week : May 19th  to 23rd

This year’s national ‘Walk to School’ week has the theme of ‘Sound Detectives’ and fits in with Noise Action Week. We will be expanding our Walk on Wednesday for this week and would like as many of you as possible to try to walk all or some of the way to school each day.

The children will be given a special Walk to School Week chart to collect their daily stickers, which will be given out at the top of Dorset Street by the railway path. We do ask that everyone is honest and that children only collect stickers for walking a reasonable distance to school. If you genuinely do walk and don’t come via Dorset Street stickers will be available on the gate. On Friday the stickers will be given out at the ‘Walk to School’ breakfast. Certificates will be awarded to those who collect a set of five stickers. Completed charts will be collected on Friday 23rd  May.

Can you help ? We need some parents and children to give out stickers at the top of Dorset Street. If a few people each offered to do one day each it will be an easy task. Please let us know if you can help.

Walk to School Week Diary Competition

We will be running a competition based on a ‘Sound Detectives’ diary that each child will be given. The diaries will encourage the children to become ‘Sound Detectives’ on their way to school by listening to the sounds around them as they walk to school. It is amazing the number of different sounds you can hear when you take the time to listen. Completed diaries will be collected after the break at the beginning of Term 6 and appropriate prizes awarded in due course.

Walk to School ‘Sound Detectives’ Breakfast ~ Friday May 23rd

As a finale to Walk to School Week we will be holding a Walk to School Breakfast, repeating an activity that has been very successful over the past two years.  Oldfield Park Baptist Church have kindly agreed to let us hold the event in their garden or hall, depending on the weather. A light breakfast of juice, fruit and bread rolls will be served at 8.30am and then we can complete the walk to school together to arrive in time for 9 o’clock. We are planning to parade to school making a noise about how good it is to walk rather than travel by car.

Travelling Light Theatre Company : Performance of Shadow Play

Also on Friday May 23rd the highly acclaimed Travelling Light Theatre Company will be visiting school to perform their latest play, Shadow Play. This is the third year running that we have invited them to perform in school and the children have got so much out of their thought provoking presentations. The company will perform to two different audiences, Y1 and Y2 in the morning and YR plus our pre school children in the afternoon. The theme of the play will link in well with the Walk to School theme too.

To cover the cost of the performances we are asking for a donation of £2.50 per child.(tickets to see the same play at the theatre cost £5). We do rely on 100% of donations being made to ensure that such events can take place for all the children. Please send your donation with the reply slip by Wednesday May 21st.

LOST SCOOTER

Please check that you have the right scooter. Reuben has lost his answering to the following description : silver metal scooter ; blue wheels ; says ‘; SCOOTER’ on the footplate ; has Reuben’s name underneath.  If this sounds just like your scooter please check that it really is yours. There was an unnamed one left on the day Reuben’s went missing so quite likely someone has the wrong one.

Cooking In School Training : Friday 16th May ; 1.30pm to 3.00pm

Anna-Marie Perry will be running a short training for a group of  parents who have offered to help with cooking club activities in school next term. She will be taling about basic hygiene, how to help children use utensils safely and give ideas for simple healthy recipes. If anyone else is interested do feel welcome to come along , just pop into the office and let us know.

Gardening Activities : If you aren’t a cook why not help us grow the ingredients !

We are also hoping to set up more regular gardening activities with the children. Tim Baines from the Community Garden is coming to school on Tuesday May 13th at 2pm to meet with those parents who have already expressed interest. Again the more the better so if you would like to get involved come along to Mrs Claridge’s office on Tuesday.

REMINDERS

Playground Working Party : Sunday May 11th

Please come along on Sunday and help to tidy up our organic garden and wildlife areas. Tasks will include placing bark on the paths in the wildlife area and on the organic garden. The loan of wheelbarrows to move bark across the playground would be appreciated and a supply of shovels would be good too. Children can come along with their parents and we all had great fun last time. Anyone with the secret to safe removal of bindweed would be especially welcome !!

COMPETITION : WANTED! Your ideas for the canteen.

Can you think of a name and theme for the canteen? How would you decorate it? What features could we add to the walls, windows etc!

We would like it to be something that fits in with healthy eating that will make the canteen a really attractive place where everyone wants to spend time eating their school dinner and enjoying other activities such as Breakfast and After School Club. Make a poster or model to show your ideas for colour schemes and decoration. The main areas to think about are the walls and flooring. We are planning to move all the storage to the side opposite the windows so the end wall will be ideal for a mural of some description.

We will have some special prizes on offer for those who come up with the most exciting and imaginative ideas as well as the possibility of seeing your designs become a reality!

Send your entries in any time up to Thursday June 5th (after half term).

Eat A Meal in May!

Come and try the new Summer Menu for yourself.

All parents are welcome to come along and try the new summer menu. As ebfore this is on a buy an adult meal get your child’s meal free basis. See the slip in the last Food For Life Newsletter or let the office know via  your child’s dinner money envelope.

Recycling Fundraising Event

On Tuesday 20th May Bristol Textile Recyclers will be talking to the children about recycling textiles including clothing, curtains, bed linen, towels, belts, shoes and handbags. The children will be given an information pack to bring home and a bag to collect any suitable items you may have for recycling. Tuesday 3rdJune will be collection day . A van will be available as you come to school and we ask that you bring along your bags on this day and place them directly in the van. This means that you have the whole of half term to look out items and perhaps ask neighbours and grandparents to help too. We will receive a donation per kilogram of recycling collected. The money raise will go towards our canteen refurbishment.

Bath Half Marathon Fundraising

We now have the total raised by Mandy Waldron’s run in the marathon and the sponsored Sports Skills event in school to announce which is a fantastic £650.
