2007 / 08 Number 15.  4th April   2008

Dear Parents,

We have now reached the two week ‘Spring’ break which I hope you all enjoy. Please find the time to read the newsletters today and keep them in a safe place to refer to before we return.

Open Morning.

It was good to see so many of you in school for open morning last Friday and especially the number of dads who were able to make it. We hope you enjoyed the opportunity to share your child’s learning  and look at the displays in school. Thank you for the many positive comments about the morning. A big thank you to Jen Morgan and Karen Newman for organising the crèche in the hall. This once again seemed to be very successful and busy.

SATs Meeting for Year 2 Parents

Please come along on Tuesday April 22nd  at 6.30pm to find out more about the Year 2 assessments which will be taking place up to the end of May. We will explain what the assessment tests and tasks involve, how we prepare your child in school, what you can do as parents and give you the chance to see past years’ activities.

Parents Evening Summer 08 : Advance Warning !!!

We will be holding parents evenings during the first part of the summer term as the teachers feel that it is more valuable to discuss your child’s progress earlier in the term, whilst there is still a significant amount of teaching time left. The discussion that takes place will then form the basis of the report you will receive in July. These will be held during the second week of term on Monday April 28th and Wednesday April 30th.

Monday April 28th   from 3.30pm to 6.00 pm and

Wednesday  April  30th   from 4.00 to 7.00pm.

Appointments will last ten minutes. You will be able to discuss your child’s progress this year and targets for the remainder of the year . Year 2 parents will also have the opportunity to be informed about the likely outcomes of the end of Key Stage 1 assessments which will be taking place during May.

We would encourage all parents to make an appointment. Lists will be displayed outside the classrooms as soon as we return. We will place the lists for Year 2 on the windows   just inside the blue doors to save you trekking up to the far end of the school.

Family SEAL Assembly and Workshop

The first assembly of next term’s theme ,’Relationships’ , will take place on the first morning of term, 21st April at 9.15am. All are welcome.

The Family SEAL workshop will be on Wednesday 30th April starting at 9.00am in the canteen.

Homework Questionnaire.

Thank you for the many responses to this questionnaire which I will be collating during the holiday. If you haven’t returned yours yet but wish to do so please send it in at the start of next term.

Open Morning for Prospective Parents : Friday 25thApril 9.30 to 11.30am

Please let anyone you know who may have a child due to start in September 2009 that they are most welcome to come along to school for our open morning on the first Friday of next term. Copies of the prospectus will be available and we will be showcasing a variety of activities that take place at Oldfield Park Infants’ School.

Sweets in School

Some time ago, in response to parents comments, we decided to end a trend of children bringing in sweets to share for their birthdays or following a holiday. We thought we should issue a reminder as the main holiday season starts. Whilst we appreciate the gesture of sharing we would still prefer not  to encourage this.

We do celebrate birthdays in school at our assemblies and we would love to receive a postcard showing where the children have spent their holidays which we can use in school.

More Family Learning Opportunities

There are still a few places left on each of the following courses for parents and children to enjoy together.

Mad Science ! (For parents and children in Reception and Year 1)

Fridays commencing Friday 25th April with a short taster session from 9 to 9.3oam followed by 4 weekly sessions on Fridays from 9 to 11am

First the tutor briefs parents on the scientific activity and then your child joins you to carry it out. It sounds great fun and in other schools has included launching rockets on the playground!! We can take up to 10 parents and their children for this course. We are sorry but we cannot take Year 2 children because the course takes place during the end of Key Stage 1 tests.

Ready Steady Cook (Open to all.)

This course is for parents and children to enjoy cooking simple healthy recipes together. It will be run by Anna Marie Perry who ran a similar course for us last year and also provided workshops for us during our Rainbow Eating Week. The course will take place during term 6 on six Thursday afternoons from 5th June to 10th July. We can take up to 8 parents and their children for this course as we have limited space for cooking in the staff room. This course was thoroughly enjoyed by those who took part last year.

Unfortunately there will NOT be a crèche for either of these courses.

To register your interest in either course please complete the reply slip at the end of the newsletter.

School Website

The website has been updated with lots of new photos in particular many several of our Pirate  theme week. I know that many of you find the website a good way to let friends and family who are living elsewhere in the country keep in touch with the children’s activities.

Food For Life Newsletter

Please take time to read the news of our work towards Food For Life Gold including ideas for family activities to celebrate the year of Food and Farming.

Playground Working Party : Sunday May 10th

Please put this date in your diaries . We are planning a working party morning from 10am to 1pm to help prepare the school grounds for the summer term. Tasks will include placing bark on the paths in the wildlife area and on the organic garden. The loan of wheelbarrows to move bark across the playground would be appreciated and a supply of shovels would be good too. Children are welcome with their parents and we all had great fun last time.

First Thing in the Mornings

As the summer terms start we would like to encourage all children to be a little more independent in the mornings. We know that many parents of children in Years 1 and 2 already encourage their children to enter the classrooms on their own in the mornings. This makes a big difference to the teachers as they prepare the children for a calm start to the school day and is much appreciated. It is also appropriate for the children to learn to do simple tasks for themselves such as sorting out coats, lunch boxes and book bags.

It is now time for the reception children to begin coming into class on their own from the cloakrooms. The teachers will be encouraging this from the beginning of next term and will have a few incentives to help. This is not intended to make you feel unwelcome but is part of the children’s gradual development during their time with us.

Please could we also ask that discussions with the class teachers are kept to a minimum in the mornings? This really is a time when only the most urgent and brief messages should be passed on as the teachers do need to be able to settle the whole class and be ready to start the register promptly at 9.00am.

We are always happy to arrange a mutually convenient time to talk with you at greater length.

And in the evenings ……

As you know both reception classes leave school by the front door and we are very careful about making sure that each child is collected by the appropriate adult.

Please can you help us to maintain our high safety standards by observing the following rules :-

  • Stand well away from the doors preferably on the playground side of the yellow railings and away from the blue gates.
  • Please do not try to come back into the building until all the reception children have been released. You are welcome to come back in to use the toilets or collect forgotten items but this must be after we have safely dismissed all the children.
