March 2008
Dear Parents,
Happy Easter to everyone ! I hope
you all enjoy the long weekend break despite the forecast being for wintry
rather than spring like weather. Today we have enjoyed an Easter Egg Hunt in
the school grounds and each child should have received a prize.
Congratulations to Mandy Waldron on completing the Half
Marathon last Sunday and I know she appreciated your support along the route. I
also know that several other parents were involved in the event so well done to
everyone associated with the school who ran.
Sponsored Sports
Skills Event.
All the children enjoyed the Sports Skills event on Friday
when they worked with Alex and Jason from Coerver Coaching. All the children
who took part should have received a certificate. We now need you to collect up
any sponsor money that you have been promised and bring it in by Friday March
31st so we can add it to Mandy’s grand total and make a donation to
Sport Relief.
Open Morning : Friday March 28th 2007
All
parents are invited to visit the school on this morning sometime between 9.15
and 10.30am. This is to give you the opportunity to spend some time with your
child looking at and sharing his / her learning. Your child might also like to
take you on a short tour of the school to see some of the displays which should
include some of our Book Week work.
You
are not expected to spend the full hour in school and may pop in anytime during
the hour. About 20 minutes spent with your child should be long enough. If you
have more than one child there should be time to see both of them.
This
is not a time to discuss your child’s progress with the class teacher. There
will be another opportunity for individual appointments during Term 5.
If
you are not able to attend the morning then grandparents are more than welcome,
however due to limitations of space we would prefer only one or two visitors
per child.
It
would also help enormously if you could share the care of pre-school children.
As last year we will run a small crèche in the hall for anyone who cannot find
alternative care.
We
will need to take the registers between 9.00 and
Targets for Learning
in
Following open morning each parent will receive an updated
target sheet for their child, similar to the one given out at the November parents
evening. If you have any questions about
the targets set please approach your child’s class teacher.
Homework Questionnaire.
The results of our annual parents’ questionnaire show a wide
range of opinions about the amount and type of homework children receive. We
are planning to revise our Homework Policy and provision ready for next year
and would appreciate it if as many parents as possible could complete the
attached questionnaire.
Open Morning for Prospective Parents : Friday 25thApril
9.30 to 11.30am
Please let anyone you
know who may have a child due to start in September 2009 that they are most
welcome to come along to school for our open morning on the first Friday of
next term. Copies of the prospectus will be available and we will be showcasing
a variety of activities that take place at Oldfield Park Infants’ School.
Children starting
School in September 2009 (born between 01/09/04
to 31/08/05
If your child is due to start school here in September 2009
please make sure we have his / her name on our list. We don’t always know the
age of younger brothers and sisters and you will need to apply for a place for
them through B&NES. Placing their name on our list makes sure that
B&NES contact you at the right time. If you apply at the right time
brothers and sisters of children here or at the juniors get places before
others. This year several younger brothers and sisters applied late and some
cannot be offered a place which is a cause for concern that we want to avoid.
Let’s Get Cooking
and Cookery Bags
Thank you to those parents who offered their support for this project. Despite pressing all the buttons at right time we were unsuccessful initially and have been put on the waiting list. We are not going to let this put us off and the volunteers are still keen to get going with cooking activities so we hope to get some started early in the summer term.
Meanwhile our new Cookery Bags have been in use for the first time and have been very well received. Every child in school should get the opportunity to take one home over the next two terms.
My First Gig Music
Club
If you are interested in your child (Y1 / Y2) attending this
after school music club on Mondays in Term 5, Nick and Lara from ‘My First Gig’
will be in school on Wednesday 26th March at 3.15pm to tell you a
bit more about what is planned. This is for parents to attend with their
children. Following the meeting further information and booking forms will be
available to all children in Y1 and 2.
More Family Learning
Opportunities
The Family Learning service is offering to run the following
courses in school during Terms 5 & 6.
Mad Science ! (For parents and children in Reception and Year 1)
This course will take place after Easter for 4 weeks, day
and time to be confirmed. Each session lasts about an hour. First the tutor
briefs parents on the scientific activity and then your child joins you to
carry it out. It sounds great fun and in other schools has included
launching rockets on the playground!! We
can take up to 10 parents and their children for this course. We are sorry but
we cannot take Year 2 children because the course takes place during the end of
Key Stage 1 tests.
Ready Steady Cook (Open to all.)
This course is for parents and children to enjoy cooking
simple healthy recipes together. It will be run by Anna Marie Perry who ran a
similar course for us last year and also provided workshops for us during our
Rainbow Eating Week. The course will take place during term 6 on six Thursday
afternoons from 5th June to 10th July. We can take up to
8 parents and their children for this course as we have limited space for
cooking in the staff room. This course was thoroughly enjoyed by those who took
part last year.
Unfortunately there will NOT be a crèche for either of these
courses.
To register your interest in either course please complete
the reply slip at the end of the newsletter.
New Summer School
Dinner Menus
The new menus have been published and will start immediately
after the two week ‘Spring’ holiday. Catering will soon be providing each family with a newsletter
containing the menus. In the meantime there is a copy on the ‘Food For Life’
board.
INSET Days
We have set the dates for our remaining two INSET days of
2007 / 2008.
These will be Friday June 6th and Friday July 11th
. School will be closed to all children on these occasions.
Contact details
Can I
remind parents that it is vital that we have up to date contact details for you
as well as the name and number of an additional adult that we can contact in
case of you not being available in an emergency. Please let us know of any
changes in home or mobile phone numbers on the attached slip.
In future
we will have change of details forms (printed on yellow paper) available in the
lobby with the holiday forms etc.. These can be completed and left in the top
red pocket.
Head Lice : please check over the
break
The winter
weather doesn’t seem to be killing off these pests so we are asking all parents
to carry out a check over the Easter weekend and treat heads if necessary with
your preferred lotion.
Once again have a very Happy Easter.
Yours sincerely
Jo Claridge
