2007 / 08 Number 12 . 15th  February   2008

Dear Parents,

Here we are at the half-term break. Let’s hope that the lovely weather we’ve enjoyed this week continues so that we can all have a good rest and return refreshed.

Parent Governor Election

We have had two further nominations for the remaining parent governor vacancy. Therefore, we will be holding an election after the half term break.

Family SEAL

The next theme is ‘Good to Be Me’ and we will be starting the new term with an assembly straight away on Monday February 25th at 9.15am so please don’t forget to come along.

Food For Life Noticeboard

Hopefully our lovely new board will have some information on it by the time you read this . if you have any food / health related information that would be of interest to the school community please bring it in for display.

Book Week is coming… Shiver me timbers ! March 3rd to 7th 2008

The programme and details of events for Book Week will be sent out as soon as we return from the break. The main events that parents may like to become involved in are as follows,  just to give you sufficent advance warning.

Wednesday  March 5th  : Book Swap Day . We will be giving adults the opportunity to bring in books to swap this year. Bring them in the morning and come back for swapping and a cup of tea from 2.30pm

Wednesday March 5th  : Quiz Hour at 6pm. This will run alongside the ’Book at Bedtime’ event for the children so why not come along and join in.

Thursday March 6th : Meet Mike Jubb. 2.15pm Mike Jubb is an author who will be performing to Y1 and 2 and running poetry workshops for the children. At the end of the afternoon he is going to put on an entertaining performance / talk for all parents who wish to attend . If you are part of the Family Learning Group that meets on Thursdays we are going to use this as part of that week’s programme so you won’t miss out !

Friday March 7th : Dressing Up Day Don’t forget to start planning your child’s costume but remember we do not expect it to be elaborate or expensive to produce. Why not make something together during the holiday ?

Pirates Ahoy ! at the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum

Pirates seem to be a popular theme at the moment. This is a half term event at the above museum which is to be found by Templemeads Station in Bristol. It is for children aged 3 to 10 years and sounds great fun including live interactive shows, fancy dress, art and craft activities and treasure trials. Entry costs £7.95 for adults, £3.95 for children over 5 years and is free for under 5s. It is cheaper if you arrive by train. For more details see the museum website www.empiremuseum.co.uk  or telephone 0117 9254980

See the last newsletter for details of ‘Pirates Ahoy’ at the Colston Hall on Sunday February 24th

Bath Half Marathon ; Sunday 16th March

Mandy Waldron, parent of Mackenzie in Purple Class, is running in the Bath Half Marathon to raise money for the school. We are therefore organising a fundraising event in school to show our support for Mandy and help her reach her target.

Coerver coaching , who run our Breakfast Club, will be in school on Friday March 14th to run a sports skills event for each class. We are asking each child to collect sponsorship for taking part . The money collected will be added to Mandy’s total and an amount will also be given to ‘Sport Relief’ which starts on the same weekend. If your child is unable to collect sponsorship from friends and family they might like to bring along a little loose change on the day instead. A sponsorship form will be sent home after the break but you might like to ask a few family and friends for support during the week off.

Supporting Mandy on the day.

It has become traditional for parents and children to gather on the corner of Dorset Close on Race day to support our runners with a banner and plenty of encouraging noise. We usually find that meeting at about 11.45am means we are in good time to see the action !

Open Morning : Friday  March 28th 2007

Although this is some time off I know that some reception parents wanted to know a bit more about Open Morning.

All parents are invited to visit the school on this morning sometime between 9.15 and 10.30am. This is to give you the opportunity to spend some time with your child looking at and sharing his / her learning. Your child might also like to take you on a short tour of the school to see some of the displays which should include some of our Book Week work.

You are not expected to spend the full hour in school and may pop in anytime during the hour. About 20 minutes spent with your child should be long enough. If you have more than one child there should be time to see both of them.

This is not a time to discuss your child’s progress with the class teacher. There will be another opportunity for individual appointments during Term 5.

If you are not able to attend the morning then grandparents are more than welcome, however due to limitations of space we would prefer only one or two visitors per child.

It would also help enormously if you could share the care of pre-school children. As last year we will run a small crèche in the hall for anyone who cannot find alternative care.

We will need to take the registers between 9.00 and 9.15am so need to ask you to leave the children as usual at the start of the school day. If you prefer not to return home you are welcome to wait in the canteen until the doors re-open.

Bear Flat Pre School

This pre school in Bruton Avenue currently has some spaces for children on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. For more information see the parents’ notice board, their website www.bearflatpreschool.co.uk or call Sandra on 445694 during pre school hours or 423736 at other times.

Oldfield Park After School Club News

Following consultation with parents and Bath & North East Somerset  officers, the Committee is pleased to report that they have agreed to hand over management of the club to Louise and Izzy.  A new registration for OFSTED needs to be processed along with other checks but hopefully this transfer will take place within the near future. The committee will however remain in office until this date.

Thank you to all the parents for their help in supporting the committee and club over the past few years J

Missing Scooter

If your child has a pink ‘Nebulus’ scooter please could you check that it is the right one. One named Eva Palmer Frost underneath went missing earlier this week.

Bath and North East Somerset Parent Partnership Service : Parents’ Forum

This is an opportunity for parents of children with special needs to meet together to discuss issues that affect them. It takes place on Thursday March 6th from 9.30am to 11.30am at Meeting Room 7 in Riverside, Keynsham. If you are interested in attending please contact Lynn Attwood on 01225 394294 or Chris Jorgensen on 01225 394382.

Please be aware that there have been reports of a few unpleasant incidents of older children approaching younger ones in the Highland Terrace area. With half term approaching and more free time for playing outside  please be vigilant.

I do hope that everyone has a fantastic half term break.

Yours sincerely

Jo Claridge

Headteacher
