2007 / 08 Number 11 . 1st February   2008

Dear Parents,

February has arrived and the term seems to be racing on by. Read on for news of events for the rest of this term and beyond !

A New Baby

I am sure most of you will have heard the lovely news that Ailsa McKenzie gave birth to a little girl on Saturday January 26th at 7.15am . Isobel Charlotte weighed in at 9lb 1oz and was at home with the rest of her family three hours later. We all send our love and good wishes to Ailsa, Brendan, Tom and Nico and look forward to meeting Isobel soon.

Playground Rules

Following on from our ‘Friendship Week’ we have involved the children in re writing our Playground Rules. The School Council have finalised the wording as follows :

J           Be a good friend.

J           Listen to each other.

J           Be respectful.

J           Smile at each other.

J           Use the different parts of the playground properly.

J           Help each other

We will be looking at these in more detail in our assemblies over the next couple of weeks.

We would really appreciate parents taking the time to discuss the rules with their children and what they mean in terms of behaviour.

As a whole school we are concentrating on playground behaviour at the moment, being very clear about our expectations and what is and is not acceptable. We believe that playtime should be an enjoyable experience for everyone.

Parent Governor Election

We had one nomination for the two parent governor vacancies advertised.

Therefore I am able to declare Andy Mason (parent of Charles in Green Class) duly elected.

We still need to recruit one further parent governor. So if you meant to stand but didn’t quite get round to it now is your chance.

Please follow the procedures outlined in the previous letter. Nomination forms are available from  the school office and should be returned to school by Friday February 15th 2008. If there are more nominations than places an election will be held.

Snow Pyramid

As you will see this year’s Snow (emergency) Pyramid is attached. Please keep this in a safe place so that you can use it if necessary. If your telephone number has changed or is wrong please let us know so we can amend the information and stop any breaks in the chain.

Family Learning Course : Keeping Up with the Children

Several parents have enquired about this course which looks at the way children are taught basic skills of reading, writing and maths in school. We have run this successfully over the past four years and the parents who have taken part have been enthusiastic about how much they learned. The course will be run by a tutor from B&NES with contributions from our own staff as appropriate. You will also have the chance to shape the course to suit your own interests.

The course will run for seven weeks (1 taster session plus six sessions of two hours each) on Thursday afternoons. The taster session is on Thursday February 14th at 1pm and the six sessions will take place on Thursday afternoons after half term. At the same time a free crèche will be running for anyone who needs childcare in order to attend.

Please see attached flier for details of how to apply.

Book Week is coming… Shiver me timbers !

We are taking pirates as our exciting theme for our Book Week 2008. The week takes place from March 3rd to 7th and includes World Book Day. Plans are now well under way with highlighted including visiting authors and storytellers booked to work with all classes, the brilliant Storybox Theatre performing, Book at Bedtime, competitions and a themed menu plus a few surprises along the way !! Oh yes, the Friday will be dressing up day so you might want to start planning your child’s costume along the theme of pirates and the sea.  Please do not feel that you have to buy a costume for your child. We love to see home made items and there is plenty of scope for making hats, eye patches and flags etc. A detailed programme of events will follow soon.

Pirates Ahoy : Family Music and Fun Day at the Colston Hall Bristol

Mr George spotted this activity day on Sunday February 24th which sounds great fun and could get you in the mood for Book Week. At 10am and 11am there are a variety of workshops ; musical instruments, pirate crafts and music making. These are followed by a swashbuckling pirate themed concert at 12 noon. It is aimed at children from 6 to 11 years. Tickets cost £7 for adults and £3.50 for under 16s. Box office 0117 922 3686 www.colstonhall.org

School Grounds Working Party Morning

Thanks to all those who turned up on a very damp Sunday morning a couple of weeks ago and worked so hard to tidy up the wildlife area and organic garden. The difference they made is very clear to see and we now have two new apple trees growing in the school grounds. The children who came along had a great time too although baths were the order of the day afterwards ! It is also lovely to see the bulbs we have planted over the past few years beginning to flower.

Did you take the wrong spade home ? One of our families has lost a garden spade with a bolt through the handle holding the metal to the wood. If you came along could you please check that you don’t have it by mistake.

SEAL : Getting on and Falling Out Follow Up Assembly

A reminder that this will take place on Wednesday 13th February at 10.00am. The children will be sharing some of their learning about friendship.

Saying ‘Goodbye’ to Jane Stone

A reminder that we are making a collection to present Jane with a special gift from the many children she has supported over the years.  Should you wish to, please send your contribution in an envelope clearly stating that it is for Jane’s gift. We would appreciate receipt of contributions by Friday February 15th 2008.
