                   2007 / 08 Number 03 . October 12th  2007

Dear Parents,

As we come to the end of an eventful ‘Eat A Rainbow’ week, I hope that your children have enjoyed the variety of activities on offer. Thank you to those who have been into school to help with cooking activities and trips to the organic garden. Look out for displays of our learning around school , especially in the hall and on the website.

There is also a Food For Life special edition attached. Please make sure that you read this and do your best to respond in some way to help get this project off to a good start.

‘Meet the Teacher’ Afternoons

A reminder that Mrs Stroud and Miss Wilson are looking forward to seeing you at their ‘Meet the Teacher’ afternoons next week.

Green Class    Monday October 15th                         2.30pm

Red Class       Tuesday October 16th             2.30pm

Family SEAL Workshop

It was amazing to welcome so many of you to the first Family SEAL workshop on Wednesday. Once again thank you for such a positive response. I hope that you all found the sessions interesting. I know that the opportunity to work with your child in the school setting was definitely the highlight and the pictures you made together were really lovely. We might be asking to borrow one or two to share with other teachers later on.

Harvest Celebration

A reminder that our harvest festival will take place on Wednesday October 17th with elderly people from the local area invited to join the children for this celebration. We would appreciate gifts of tins and dried foods which will be given to the Genesis Project in Bath who provide for the homeless and needy. Alternatively fresh fruit and vegetables may be brought. These will be distributed to the elderly after the celebration and the remainder sold on the playground by some of the Year 2s from 2.45pm onwards on Thursday 18th October. The proceeds from this sale will be donated to UNICEF to help provide clean water for children in the Gambia. This has been chosen by the School Council.

We would also be grateful for shoeboxes or empty boxes of a similar size in which to display fresh produce. Please bring tins, dried fruit, produce and boxes on the morning of October 17th.

Oldfield Park Station Community Group and Walk to School Month : October  2007

Don’t forget to enter this competition to draw a logo for the group ‘On Board’ who are involved in caring for Oldfield Park Station and its surroundings. Draw your design clearly on a piece of paper. You need to think about the group working at the station and their name ‘On board’.

June Player from the group visited us last week and it was clear that the children have noticed the improvements at the station particularly the lack of litter and the lovely floral sign. Bring your entry in by 19th October and make sure it has your name on it.

There is a super prize on offer which I forgot to mention last time ~ it’s a family day out train ticket for travel any where on the network.

Firework Posters

Each child should have brought home a blank poster to complete. Remember to return your poster to school by Wednesday October 17th so that it can be entered in the competition. If you forget to bring it in you can also return it to a branch of BIBs by 22nd October. All children in school  get  a free ticket to the firework display on the recreation ground. In the past several children have been prize winners too so get drawing and painting !

School Photographer

As mentioned last time the photographer will be in school from 9am on Tuesday October 16th. . We will photograph family groups with pre school children (or other children not at this school) first. Please let the class teacher know that your child is in school and then come to the hall. It is usually quite a quick process so you should not be waiting too long. We will organise family groups where all the children are in school and take individual pictures of each child.

New on Our Website (www.oldfieldparkinfants.co.uk)

We have just added two new sections to our website , ‘Story Making’ and ‘Family SEAL’.

In the Story Making section you will find each of the termly story scripts that we use and a photographic dictionary of actions. We hope you will enjoy making use of these to find out more about what we are doing in school and support your child’s learning.

The Family SEAL section has many of the materials we are using such as the handouts from the workshops. It also has photographs of our first assembly and this week’s workshop.

There are also photos of activities in each classroom and our recent farm visit. Many parents find it’s a great way to keep family members who do not live locally in touch with what the children are doing.

If anyone doesn’t have internet access and wants to see the site I am sure we can organise a viewing in our ICT suite.

School Council

We have recently decided which children from Years 1 and 2 will serve on our school council this year.

Yellow Class               Keanu Thompson and Anna Digby

Purple Class

Blue Class                   Kenton Newman and Lauren Midgely

Orange Class              Elliot Sobey and Lily Knight

Reception representatives will join in after the holiday.

Next week the Y2 school councillors will be helping us to interview candidates for the vacancy to cover Miss McKenzie’s maternity leave.

The Year 2 children who wanted to be on the council had to explain why to their classmates before an election took place. Some of their ideas are displayed inside the ‘blue doors’ by the small group room.

Ladies Night : Friday 9th November (6.50pm - 10pm)

Just under a month now, the tickets are now on sale at £3 each.  They include a glass of wine or soft drink and a goody bag full of treats.  There should be a parent from each class selling these tickets.

It will be a wonderful evening of relaxation, treatments range from £5 to £10, which include: Indian Head Massage, Foot & Leg Massage, Henna Tattoos, Facials and much more.  We do however have one other treatment that costs £17, this is for a full body SiennaX spray tan.  If anyone is interested in having this treatment please see a PTA member before the night as we will need to give you some more information.

There will also be stalls to browse which include: Avon, Sundari Jewellery, Usborne Books, Body Shop and much more.

Help:

I would like to ask if any of you can help us with spare tea light holders or christmas fairy lights to set the atmosphere.  Please let a member of the PTA or the Office know if you can help.

I would also like to ask if any of you have babies or know of anyone that does whether the PTA could have your baby food jars and lids, they are needed for the Christmas Fayre and I would be glad if they could be handed to a member of the PTA or the Office.

Thank you.
