On Friday 25th May we held a Walk to School Super Heroes Breakfast
to celebrate National Walk to School Week.
This year the theme was Saving
the Planet and it got us thinking about how walking to school
lessens our carbon footprint. The children have been encouraged
to walk to school each day and had a special chart upon which to collect
a daily sticker. Over 100 children successfully completed their chart
and were awarded with a certificate at our Celebration Assembly.
The children were also given a
diary to complete with a variety of activities around the theme of Saving
the Planet. For example they were asked to identify common trees,
look out for examples of planet friendly and unfriendly things on the
way to school and design a planet friendly character based on a footprint.
Prizes of an inflatable globe were also awarded for the most interesting
diary kept in each class.
The breakfast was held in the grounds
of Oldfield Park Baptist Church and the children were treated to a breakfast
of fresh fruit, juice and bread.
At the breakfast we used a huge
inflatable globe to represent the amount of carbon dioxide created by
the average car journey to and from school. The children wore masks
in the form of a green man or tree person to show that by walking to
school we are recognising the importance of trees in the environment
both locally and globally.
After the breakfast the children
paraded on to school. In their masks.
Our thanks go to Oldfield Park
Baptist Church for the loan of their grounds, and to Stokes Greengrocer
, the Co-op (Scala) and Sainsburys for providing the food and drink.
