PSHE - Miss Cotton

Intent

At Oldfield Park Infant School, we believe that PSHE education is a fundamental part of every child’s education in order for them to become confident happy citizens. Our PSHE curriculum promotes our school values and ethos. From a young age we want our children to make the right choices, be sensitive to the needs of others, be respectful and polite.  PSHE is at the heart of what we do and we aim for our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society as well as developing the ‘whole child’s’ intellectual, moral, social, creative and spiritual education. PSHE is taught across the school on a weekly basis and we follow the PSHE Jigsaw scheme. Alongside this we have our Palladian Trust Values:

Respect – recognising the contribution we all make

Trust – holding trust in each other and our moral purpose. Trust that we are all doing the right thing in the right way.

Courage – being brave and taking risks

Curiosity – Always asking questions.

We aim to provide children with appropriate vocabulary to discuss these values and themes. We aim for the children to have the opportunity and willingness to try new things and persevere, to have a good understanding of how stay safe, healthy and develop good relationship and to have an appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society.

Implementation

Jigsaw covers all areas of PSHE for the primary phase including statutory Relationships and Health Education. The table below gives the learning theme of each of the six Puzzles (units) and these are taught across the school; the learning deepens and broadens every year.

At Oldfield Park Infant School we deliver lessons between 30 minutes and an hour to PSHE each week in order to teach the PSHE knowledge and skills in a developmental and age-appropriate way.

These explicit lessons are reinforced and enhanced in many ways:

Assemblies and collective worship, praise and reward system, Learning Charter, The 4 Palladian Values (respect, trust, courage and curiosity), through relationships child to child, adult to child and adult to adult across the school. We aim to ‘live’ what is learnt and apply it to everyday situations in the school community.

Class teachers deliver the weekly lessons to their own classes.

Impact

By the time children leave us they will:

  • demonstrate kindness and respect towards themselves and others;
  • have the courage and ability to try new things, challenge themselves and persevere;
  • take responsibility for their actions;
  • have a good understanding of how to stay safe, healthy and how to develop good relationships;
  • have an appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of society.

Children will be assessed against the National Curriculum Outcomes for PSHE.

In order to be confident in the impact of PSHE across the whole school community, the PSHE leads will monitor and assess the subject through discussion with pupils, gathering evidence of written activities, floor books, monitoring displays and ongoing discussion with colleagues.
